http://AMAskincare.com We are going to talk about how our multiple modality approach to get rid of acne and acne scars utilizing a combination of laser technologies and other treatment options will achieve the best possible results for your skin.

We have performed 1000s of treatments for acne and acne scarring on the face, neck, shoulders and back over the past 15 years. From mild acne that appears as pimples or white heads prior to a woman’s period then suddenly disappears, to severe cystic acne on the face, neck, shoulders and back that was truly destroying the patient’s skin leaving behind deep scars. We have worked with the most advanced medical lasers as well as every conventional acne treatment option there is, including pharmaceuticals such as Accutane. Our exploration into the best way to get rid of acne and the subsequent scarring has also lead us to explore non-conventional acne therapies such as acupuncture, herbs, essential oils, diet and homeopathic treatments. We have even investigated the old wives’ tales about how to cure acne that our grandmothers taught us. Unfortunately, few of these various treatments for acne are scientifically developed or medically proven. Many, if not most of these treatments, do not work at all. Fortunately, we have discovered what treatments work and what treatments do not. By combining these conventional, alternative and laser acne treatments into a coordinated multiple modality protocol, we have been able to get rid of acne and acne scarring for nearly all of our patients. The best treatment we have found for acne are treatments that utilize lasers. For nine years we have tracked our patients that have undergone laser treatments for their acne and most have not had a recurrence.

The treatments for acne are amazingly quite simple, though the discovery of the most effective protocol took years of research. 3-5 laser treatments are typically needed depending on the responsiveness of your physiology, the severity of the acne and the depth of the acne scars. During treatment, 3 different lasers are used to get rid of your acne once and for all.

The first laser targets sebaceous glands. This shuts down the over production of sebum. When these glands become overactive they grow too many sebum producing cells which causes large numbers of these cells to die. These dead cells are the white gunk that comes out when you squeeze a pimple.

The second laser targets inflammation. An inflammatory immune reaction is the body’s natural response to bacterial infection. This is what causes pimples to appear red and swollen. Much of the scarring that is associated with cystic acne is caused by this inflammation. Healing of the cystic acne is greatly accelerated when the immune response is shut down.

The third laser targets the uppermost dead skin layer of the epithelium. By removing this layer of skin the pores are able to breath and expel any trapped sebum. Treated sebaceous glands will often purge their excess contents so this is particularly important following the first laser treatment. This will also stimulate the renewal of your entire epithelium revealing a bright new acne free epithelium underneath.

Photodynamic therapy may also be used for those with severe cystic acne. We have found that PDT combined with other specific acne treatments will cure even the most severe cases of cystic acne on the face 95% of the time. Photodynamic therapy is based on a natural biochemical reaction that is already taking place in the sebaceous glands. PDT shuts down the hyperactivity and overgrowth of sebaceous glands by amplifying this biochemical reaction. The Porphyrin molecule is at the heart of this biochemistry. When activated by specific frequencies of light, porphyrins present in sebaceous glands release a singlet oxygen atom that quickly kills other living cells. Aminolevulenic Acid, or ALA, is applied to the patients skin to increases the amount of porphyrins being produced by the sebaceous glands. The ALA is then photo activated by use of specific lasers or a blue light, that emit a frequency of energy that is target specific and very effective of individual acne cysts. PDT protocols combined with blue light therapy and other laser treatments are the best acne treatment we have ever experienced. 2-3 PDT treatments are typically necessary depending on the severity of the acne. One of the great things about PDT is that once completed, a return of the cystic acne is rare.
